Paraguay declares San Ignacio Guazú as the birthplace of football. The Chamber of Deputies of Paraguay approved a project that officially recognizes San Ignacio Guazú as the birthplace of football, supporting investigations that locate the origin of the game in Paraguayan territory. The initiative is based on studies by a historian and university professor from San Ignacio Guazú, who argues that the Guarani people already played a game of ball with their feet in the Jesuit Missions founded in 1609. The document also cites the writings of Jesuit priests Joaquín Peramás and José Cardiel, who described during the 18th century how the indigenous people disputed matches using only their feet, with a rubber ball, after religious celebrations. The legislators also highlighted that the ball was known in Guarani as "mangái", made from resin of the same tree.
