The Cañonero Paraguay (C-1) and the Patrullero Capitán Cabral (P-01) departed from the Villeta Port on Monday, August 14, heading to Encarnación, Itapúa, with the goal of participating as an attraction in the 2026 World Rally Championship, which will take place from August 27 to 30. The passage through the Yacyretá lock occurred on Thursday, August 17, at 16:00, marking a milestone in Paraguay's naval history.
History and modernization
The Cañonero Paraguay, designed by engineer José Bozzano in 1930, was remotorized in 2023 to regain its autonomous navigation capability. It currently serves as a Training Vessel for the Navy. The Patrullero Capitán Cabral, built in 1907 as the remolcador Triunfo, remains in service as one of the oldest vessels in the world after its diesel remotorization in 1980.
Military training
Aboard are cadets from the Fourth Naval Course and deckhands from the Second Year of the Navy's Officer School, who are undergoing this navigation as essential training. The Patrullero also carries out humanitarian missions, delivering medical aid and food to communities in the Paraguayan Chaco.
